Current Situation

What we know about the eviction plans

On December 1, the deal of the early coal phase-out between Robert Habeck, NRW Minister Mona Neubaur and RWE CEO Krebber was approved in the Bundestag(1). On December 8, the mining authority, which reports to Minister Neubaur, approved RWE’s new main operating plan(2).

Currently, we expect an eviction attempt around January 14 with a lockdown immediately preceding it. There will also be a demo in Lützerath on January 14.
There will be legal points of contact at Lützerath and in Keyenberg throughout the eviction attempt.

On the instructions of Interior Minister Reul, the police have begun to prepare for the eviction operation (3).
The city of Erkelenz did not follow the instruction to submit a request for enforcement assistance to the police. The next highest responsible authority, the district of Heinsberg, announced on December 14 that it would commission an eviction (4). Publicly, politicians and police speak of the desire that the eviction is lawful. However, the reason given so far for an eviction the “danger for the energy supply security“(5) emanating from the village is there a minus point. Because there is no study that proves this, on the contrary, two studies speak of the fact that the coal is not needed in a timely manner(6,7). Even the studies commissioned by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in the short term do not suggest anything in this direction and speak of a utilization until 2030. This means that there is no energy policy need for a clearance in the next 3-4 years, which means the eviction will be illegal.

Currently, the state government can still call a moratorium.

Climate justice needs direct action, so come to Lützerath and let’s end the coal age!
